Single: Kingdom of Crows - Despondency

Kingdom of Crows Single Despondency

Kingdom of Crows - Despondency

Info: Last year saw Dublin band Kingdom of Crows, led by guitarist and song-writer Stephen Kelly, release full debut album, The Truth is the Trip, an album I strongly felt was one of the best Irish rock albums in years, and still do. Thankfully we don't have too much longer to wait for the sophomore album, Despondency, which will be out in October with accompanying vinyl release. Only yesterday we got our first taster of what to expect with a video for the first single which shares the albums name, directed by Greg Byrne and with vocals courtesy of the talented long-term Kingdom of Crows collaborator and song-writer, Lucy Earley. The video is visually enticing and intriguing, fitting in perfectly with the song itself, it's finale like King Kong's first meeting with Ann Darrow in a nightclub!

The first single retains the dark, brooding mood of last years album, but avoids dropping into the over-serious category, allowing itself to breathe through its rhythmic, dance-like, rolling guitar riffs and percussion. Earley's vocals are commanding and in charge, directing the feel and atmosphere of the track for the listener. The chopping sway of the rhythm perfectly builds up as the song progresses, providing us with a cool, assertive and snappy single that will appeal to those unfamiliar with KoC's sound, and if there's any justice, the signs are that a wider audience is inevitable in the run up to Despondency's release later this year.
