REWS Miss You In The Dark
Rews

Info: In our latest independent Irish playlist we kick off with the brooding thick bass-lines and percussion of London / Irish rock duo Rews and their latest single, 'Miss You In The Dark', it's the perfect way to open this collection of the best Irish releases from the last few weeks. Crunching verses, menacing choruses, the band's new song is definitely our favourite release of theirs to date.

Sligo synth trio Dioscó na mbó delight us yet again with their funk-laden electro-pop grooves on new single 'Are You Busy Enough?' which has a little bit of Republic of Loose vibes rocking through the chorus, the lost song from the Jackie Brown soundtrack, the chaps ooze cool and mellow mellow sounds with a disco twist, lovely stuff.

Off the back of their headline show in Whelan's last week, the alt-pop electronic trio from Dublin Tanjier bring us the wonderful atmospheric single 'Yu', for fans of Wild Beasts and Alt-J, these guys are just getting better and better at creating a very unique contemporary electro-pop sound.

23-year-old Tipperary artist Joe Geaney who operates under the moniker of Floating Ballroom delivers his latest single, 'Wolf Call', ambient and finely honed, the track makes a success of not overly complicating things, and thus allowing the listener to become absorbed at a very early stage. His other recent material has been receiving great support from the BBC's excellent Across The Line show and I think we can expect big things soon for this solo act.

Young Earth Worth It
Young Earth

Among the hugely vibrant local scene in Belfast, indie-pop act Bad Fit have been steadily increasing their presence over the past 12 months, latest single 'Worry Doll' captures them reaching right into their mixture of upbeat and sombre moods and winning. The see-saw body of the track is beautifully lifted up to ethereal heights as it reaches its crescendo, we are impatient for more.

Perennial earworm pop-rock gunners Young Earth released their latest single, 'Worth It' just two weeks ago and are currently on tour to promote the track, with two festival dates coming up in Donegal (OTB & Swell Festival) this month. Adding more rock-bite around their pop foundations has been working very well for a band who is currently reaping the rewards for incessant touring and local shows over the past 12 months, they are also the only band in the country who have never drank beer from a glass.

The Plea - Wild One

A track that has grown on me very quickly is 'Wild One' courtesy of Donegal band The Plea. It reminds me a bit of New York's The Walkmen or Wilco in their more country-folk moments, it's a hopeful song which keeps a firm hand on its emotional delivery, never overdoing it, but getting it just right, it’s taken from their forthcoming album Propanoia due in Autumn.

A visibly gifted up and coming solo act, Graham Mitchell, has released a new single, 'You've Disappeared', the follow up to the hugely successful 'Inside I'm Dancing'. On the surface Mitchell comes across as a singer-songwriter with a penchant for writing no frills folk-pop, but that's an overly-simplistic analysis. His vocal can be exquisite, seemingly cut from the same cloth as classic solo acts such as Donovan and Jackson Browne, there's also an awareness that filling in empty soundscapes with orchestral arrangements can lift a track to the next level.

For their latest single 'Battle Lines', Dublin pop duo CARRON have dipped their toes in a mixture of 90's pop rock á la Shania Twain or more recent pop songstress LeAnn Rimes. The wonderful thing about CARRON is that you sense they are always in a constant state of flux, they're here to try new things and push outwards in their search for new layers to add to their sound.

Last but not least comes the latest single from Kildare alternative-folk act Peco, 'Self-Help (A Beginners Guide)', which instantly reminded me of a country-tinged version of an A House track. There are a lot of influences at play on the track which is an ode to the darkside of 'The Fear', anxiety and self-doubt, delivered in an upbeat and rhythmic tempo.
